Abstract
This study explores the burnout experiences of play therapists in the developmental process through the use of qualitative research methods. For the purpose of this study, suitable participants were selected through objective sampling, and individual interviews were performed, giving us a final total of 11 participants. Two individual interviews were conducted for each participant, consisting of 60~90 minutes for each session. The data collected through these interviews were qualitatively analyzed based on the grounded theory approach(Charmaz, 2013). As a results, a total of three theoretical categories were constructed as follows; ¡®Devoted to how I look as a play therapist¡¯, ¡®My burden increases as much as my accumulated career¡¯, ¡®I am exhausted as a play therapist¡¯. The results of this study may be summarized as follows. First, during the novice play therapist period, participants were immersed in their outward appearance and new found identity as a play therapist. Second, as a experienced play therapist, there was a sense of burden felt in terms of the expectations of others, as well as self-expectations felt in the wider context of this field being their chosen a career. Accompanying this was a sense of, exhaustion experienced through the difficulties encountered in the process of their growth as play therapists. This study investigates the burnout process of play therapists during the novice play therapist level and experienced play therapist level. Therefore, it is expected to provide useful information for the education, training, and the continued professional development of both novice play therapists and experienced play therapists which can in turn alleviate the effects of burnout.
